| KAHRAMAA and QEWC Signed an MOU with Chubu of Japan |

Under the patronage of H.E. Abdulla Bin Hamad AL-Attiyah, Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Industry, and Chairman KAHRAMAA Board of Directors, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), and Chubu Electric Power Company, Japan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to mutually coordinate and pursue continuous collaboration in energy production and transmission-related fields in Qatar.
As per the MOU, Chubu will advise QEWC and KAHRAMAA regarding the power generation technology and power system technology. Chubu will also provide required training for the staff of QEWC and KAHRAMAA.
The MOU signing ceremony took place in Qatar Petroleum at the office of H.E. Abdulla Bin Hamad AL-Attiyah, Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Industry. The MOU was signed, in H.E. AL-Attiyah presence, by H.E. Issa Shaheen Al Ghanim Vice-Chairman of KAHRAMAA, Eng. Fahad Hamad Al Mohannadi General Manager of QEWC, and Mr.Shirou Mizutani, Executive Vice-President and Director of Chubu.
At the opening of the ceremony H.E. Abdulla Bin Hamad AL-Attiyah, Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Industry said; "the maximum electricity demand in KAHRAMAA networks has grown from 941 Mega Watt (MW) in 1988 to 3,230 MW in 2006. It is expected to continue to grow to reach about 8,400 MW by 2011. Also, the annual average growth of domestic demand over the past eight years was about 8.4 per cent. The domestic demand is forecast to grow from 2,400 MW (2006) to 3,200MW (2011). The demand by Industrial and Commercial Bulk Customers is forecast to grow in the same period from 800MW to about 5,200MW."
H.E. AL-Attiyah added; " as of now, there are about 100 primary electricity transmission substations and more than 7,000 distribution stations. In the next five years, the number of primary transmission substations is expected to almost double to reach 200. More than 4,000 distribution substations are expected to be added in the same period accordingly."
H.E. AL-Attiyah said; " Transmission underground cables network is expected to grow from a present total length of about 1,000 km to about 1,500 km in the next five years. Transmission overhead lines networks will increase from about 2,000 km to about 2,200 km in the same period. Similarly, distribution networks will grow in five years from 6,000 km to14,000km for cables and from 2,000 km to 2,250km for overhead lines."
