More than 65 KAHRAMAA staff are playing active role as volunteers in the 15th Asian Games – Doha 2006 which took place in Doha, Qatar from December 1 – 15, 2006.
KAHRAMAA volunteers action show the enthusiasm of KAHRAMAA staff to be part of the Doha Asian Games success to host such a global event, which is in line with the higher management guidance to be socially responsible to our community and showing our interest of the nation pride and glory.
KAHRAMAA volunteers profiles comprises different nationalities, that reflect the multinational work environment and highlight on the importance of the culture exchange and showing our commitment toward the community not only to provide reliable and secure electricity and water supplies, but also we are here to share the added value of our staff which reflect the multi–culture and multi–nationality, to show the tolerance and integrity aspects of being part of KAHRAMAA workforce and sharing all this for the success of the games.
In this Occasion we had the chance to interview one of KAHRAMAA Managers who was played a key role in the performance of the Opening Ceremony of the Games, Mr. Eddie Lim Manager of Internal Audit Department:
KM: Why you participate in the Asian Games activities as volunteer? Eddie: I saw the advertisement asking volunteers audition for the performance. My wife and I thought it is a wonderful chance for us first to contribute something back to Qatar. Also because they were including some Far East flavor to the show of the opening performance, we thought that being Chinese we should really come in as there is are not many Chinese in Qatar.
KM: Did you enjoy the work as volunteers? And how long does it take the preparation? Eddie: I was a only performer for the opening ceremony, not as a volunteer doing other duties. The whole preparation lasted about three months. At first, rehearsals were twice a week, then in the final month, they were three times a week. Luckily all rehearsals were after working hours, I found it thoroughly enjoyable. I was in a team that has to dress up in Chinese opera costumes. We have to work as a team to synchronize our steps to the music, the team spirit was really good and we helped each other in getting the movements right, the other members in the team were from various nationalities.
KM: Does the show reflect the Chinese culture? Eddie: Needless to say, I was very pleased to be chosen for the Chinese costume part. It was a colorful costume with flashing lights. The fact that DAGOC included in the show the different cultures reflects the tolerance and understanding Qatar has of other cultures.
KM: How do you see the impact of the games on Qatar? Eddie: This Asian game is a chance for Qatar to show case its hospitality It definitely lifted Qatar’s profile as a developed nation who wants to participate in world events.
KM: Is your participation influenced by corporate values? Eddie: There is always at the back of my mind, that KAHRAMAA’s objective is to serve the community. As a KAHRAMAA employee, like all other KAHRAMAA volunteers, our participation in the Asian Games shows there is more than one way to serve the community, not just supplying electricity and water.
